Helmut Hasse was a German mathematician prominent in algebraic number theory, whose work shaped central areas of modern arithmetic. He is the author of the Hasse–Minkowski theorem on quadratic forms over number fields, and he developed foundational results in class field theory, in applications of p-adic numbers to local theory, and in Diophantine geometry — including the Hasse principle and local zeta functions. His academic career included appointments at Göttingen, Marburg, Kiel, Halle and, later, the University of Hamburg, where he established his influence as a teacher and researcher. He collaborated with figures such as Emmy Noether, Richard Brauer and Harold Davenport, producing results like the Hasse–Davenport relation and the Hasse–Arf theorem. Hasse’s output includes books and extensive reports on class fields, number theory and algebra that remained important references throughout the twentieth century. His career crossed turbulent political periods in Germany: he signed the 1933 pledge of loyalty to the National Socialist leaders and in 1937 attempted, without success, to join the Nazi Party. After the war he faced temporary restrictions but resumed his academic work and left a lasting legacy in number theory and algebra, with extensions and applications that continue to influence current research.
