Hendrik Franciscus Andriessen was a Dutch composer and organist noted for renewing Catholic liturgical music in the Netherlands and for his remarkable skill in organ improvisation. Trained at the Amsterdam Conservatory and influenced by the French tradition, his musical language ranged from masses and choral works to symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. Throughout his career he taught and led major institutions: he taught composition and theory at the Amsterdam Conservatory, directed the Utrecht Conservatory, and later served as director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He also held university posts in musicology, educating generations of musicians and composers. During the Nazi occupation he refused to join the imposed cultural chamber and suffered professional restrictions, even being temporarily imprisoned. His catalogue includes eight masses, a Te Deum, four symphonies, concertos, solo organ works, and operas, highlighting a balance between liturgical tradition and a modern symphonic language. His legacy endures in the renewal of the Dutch sacred repertoire and in his influence on students and musical relatives, making him an important figure in twentieth‑century music in the Netherlands.
