Henning Georg Mankell was a Swedish writer whose work crossed borders, best known for creating Inspector Kurt Wallander. The author of crime novels, children’s literature and plays, Mankell became one of Sweden’s most widely read writers worldwide, with translations into more than 40 languages and over 40 million books sold. His crime fiction introduced social critique and a probing view of contemporary society, combining detective plots with political and moral reflection.
Beyond literature, he played a significant role in the theatre: he lived for many years in Mozambique, where he founded and directed the Teatro Avenida in Maputo, linking culture with local engagement. Politically active, he spoke out against apartheid and other forms of oppression and took part in solidarity efforts and funding for cultural projects.
A multiple award-winner, he received important distinctions in Scandinavia and abroad, including prizes for crime fiction and honors for his contribution to children’s literature. His work left a lasting impact on the renewal of the Scandinavian crime novel and on the international promotion of Swedish literature.
