Henri-Louis Bergson was a French philosopher of international renown, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1927. His work placed intuition and the notion of duration at the center of a metaphysics oriented to immediate experience, opposing approaches that reduced human life to mechanistic laws. Among his most influential books are Essays on the Immediate Data of Consciousness, Matter and Memory, Creative Evolution, and The Two Sources of Morality and Religion. Bergson combined philosophy, biology, and psychology to criticize determinism and affirm human freedom, proposing the concept of duration as lived, qualitative time, distinct from measurable physical time. He defended intuition as a philosophical method capable of grasping reality in its continuity, in contrast to conceptual analysis and symbolic translation. A professor at institutions such as the Collège de France and the École Normale, he also took part in public debates, including on the First World War. His influence crossed diverse fields—film, literature, neuropsychology, and ethics—and his legacy helped establish an intuitionalist and spiritualist current in twentieth-century European thought.
