Henri Cosquer was a professional diver from Cassis, France, known for discovering in 1985 the submerged entrance of the cave that now bears his name in the Calanques de Morgiou near Marseille. Working first on his own and later with fellow divers, he explored an underwater passage that opens into a dry chamber containing panels of Paleolithic rock art. His observations and markings enabled cave-diving speleologists between 1990 and 1991 to complete the exploration and confirm the site’s archaeological significance. The announcement of the cave’s existence in 1991 drew intense scientific and public attention, especially after a tragic accident in which three divers lost their lives in the access gallery. Subsequent research by prehistorians and archaeologists documented nearly 500 rock representations attributed to two phases of the Upper Paleolithic, including depictions of terrestrial and marine fauna and hand stencils. Cosquer remained involved in the management of the site and in legal disputes over recognition and compensation under laws governing discoverers of archaeological sites. His discovery changed understanding of coastal use of the Mediterranean during the Pleistocene and had a lasting impact on the protection and study of submerged prehistoric art.
