Henri La Fontaine was an international jurist, socialist politician and a central figure in the Belgian and European peace movement. He graduated in law from the Free University of Brussels and practiced as an attorney before entering public life: he became one of the first socialist senators in Belgium, where he advocated for public education, women’s rights and legal solutions to international conflicts. Alongside Paul Otlet, La Fontaine helped create the International Institute of Bibliography (the Mundaneum) and contributed to the development of the Universal Decimal Classification, reflecting his interest in the organization of knowledge. As a specialist in international law, he helped found associations for arbitration and peace and presided over the Bureau International de la Paix from 1913 to 1927. His work for disarmament and multilateral cooperation was recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1913. During and after the First World War he advocated for the creation of a League of Nations and took part in peace negotiations and interparliamentary bodies. In addition to his public activities, he was devoted to mountaineering and Freemasonry; his legacy continues to inspire initiatives devoted to international law, cooperation and the dissemination of knowledge.
