Henri Moissan was a French chemist and pharmacist best known for isolating fluorine in 1886, work that earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1906. His technique of electrolyzing a molten solution of hydrogen fluoride established the method still used in the commercial production of the element and opened the way for systematic study of fluoride chemistry.
Beyond isolating fluorine, Moissan helped develop the electric arc furnace, an instrument that made it possible to synthesize borides and carbides of various elements and to investigate materials of very high hardness. His studies also led to the synthesis of compounds such as sulfur hexafluoride (with Paul Lebeau) and to attempts to produce synthetic diamonds by pressure.
A prolific researcher, he published more than three hundred papers and received international awards and honors, including the Davy Medal and election to the Royal Society. He also applied mineralogy when analyzing fragments of the Meteor Crater meteorite, identifying tiny particles of silicon carbide—now known as moissanite—whose discovery remains a lasting part of his legacy.
