Henri Texier is a French double-bassist whose career is notable for his contribution to European jazz since the 1960s. Self-taught, he became interested in the double bass at an early age and cited Wilbur Ware as an influence; in the 1960s he joined one of the first French free jazz groups, inspired by Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman, which made him a pioneer in that local movement.

Between 1968 and 1972 he was a member of Phil Woods’s European Rhythm Machine, alongside musicians such as George Gruntz and Daniel Humair, a period in which he established himself as a much-requested musician. In the following decades he remained highly active on the European scene, collaborating with artists including John Abercrombie, Didier Lockwood and Aldo Romano.

Texier also led his own projects and chamber formations, including long-standing partnerships with Louis Sclavis and the Romano–Sclavis–Texier trio, whose work explored African themes on albums such as Carnet de Routes and African Flashback. His discography includes live and studio recordings that attest to a career of wide visibility and influence on contemporary French jazz.

Recognized for his profound phrasing and rhythmic versatility, Texier left a legacy as an interpreter and composer who helped shape a dialogue between European jazz and diverse musical traditions.
