Jean-Henri Dunant was a Swiss philanthropist whose experience at the Battle of Solferino (1859) led him to found the movement that became the International Committee of the Red Cross. Trained as a businessman, he described the suffering of the wounded in Un souvenir de Solférino (1862) and proposed the creation of national relief societies and an international organization to protect victims of war. From these proposals, in 1863 the so-called “Committee of Five” was formed, including figures such as Gustave Moynier, Guillaume‑Henri Dufour, Louis Appia and Théodore Maunoir, who consolidated the initiative and saw the Geneva Convention recognize the new institution the following year. Dunant’s work became a foundation of modern humanitarian law and inspired relief practices in armed conflicts. Although his contribution is celebrated, Dunant’s personal life was marked by financial difficulties and a long conflict with Moynier, which limited his return to leadership roles. Recognized internationally — he was the first laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 — he left a lasting legacy in organizing humanitarian assistance and promoting norms to protect civilians and wounded combatants.
