Henry Jaynes Fonda was an American film actor.
He was the patriarch of a family of actors, among them his children Jane Fonda and Peter Fonda, and his granddaughter Bridget Fonda.
His debut in American cinema was in 1935, reprising the role he had played on stage in the adaptation of The Farmer Takes a Wife.
Around the same time he became friends with another up-and-coming actor, James Stewart, a friendship that lasted until his death. In 1936, Henry married Frances Seymour Brokwaw, a wealthy, divorced American with whom he had two children, the actors Jane Fonda and Peter Fonda. The marriage ended tragically in 1950, with Frances' suicide following a nervous breakdown.
