Henry Jay Lewis was an African American double bassist and conductor whose career opened doors in the United States classical music world. First revealed as a performer while still young, he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic at sixteen, becoming one of the first Black musicians to be part of a major American symphony orchestra. Trained in music in Southern California, he broadened his experience playing in military ensembles and on tours in Europe. In the 1960s he rose to national prominence when appointed assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta (1961–1965). In 1968 he founded the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and, shortly afterward, took over as music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, raising a small community ensemble to national recognition and becoming the first Black conductor to lead a major U.S. symphony. Lewis also worked at major opera houses—making his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1972—and served as a guest conductor internationally. From 1989 to 1991 he was chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra (Hilversum). His career is remembered for its pioneering role and its legacy in racial inclusion and the institutional development of American orchestras.
