Henry van de Velde was a Belgian artist and architect whose multifaceted work decisively influenced design and architecture at the turn of the 20th century. Initially a Neo-Impressionist painter and member of the group Les XX, he left painting in 1892 to devote himself to the applied arts: decoration, goldsmithing, textiles, furniture and interior design. His first domestic building, Villa Bloemenwerf, already showed the influence of the British Arts and Crafts movement and a preference for integrated solutions linking building, interior and garden.
Established in Weimar from 1899, he served as the grand duke’s artistic advisor and in 1907 founded the Grand-Ducal School of Arts and Crafts, which later became part of the movement that gave rise to the Bauhaus. At the same time he became a central figure in German Jugendstil and co-founded the Deutscher Werkbund, defending the creative autonomy of the artist against proposals for standardization.
Over his career he designed residences, museums and cultural institutions — among them the Folkwang in Hagen, the Nietzsche-Archiv in Weimar and, later, the Kröller-Müller and the Boekentoren in Ghent — and played a formative role as a teacher and mentor to generations of architects. His legacy lies in the articulation of art, industry and education, and in the transition from Art Nouveau to modernist approaches to design.
