Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was an American poet and educator whose work enjoyed widespread popularity in the nineteenth century. The author of narrative and lyric verse noted for its musicality, he became known for famous poems such as “Paul Revere’s Ride,” The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline, which helped shape an accessible American poetic tradition for general readers. He also produced the first complete American translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy and published important early collections such as Voices of the Night and Ballads and Other Poems. A Bowdoin graduate, he taught at that institution and later at Harvard after a lengthy period of study in Europe, where he improved his command of several languages and deepened his interests in literature and translation. His academic career supported his literary output until his retirement in 1854, when he devoted himself full time to writing and translating. Recognized in his lifetime as the most popular American poet, Longfellow exerted considerable cultural influence, though critics noted a tendency toward sentimentality and imitation of European models. His legacy endures in the diffusion of poetic narratives that blend legend, history, and mythology, as well as in his role in introducing European classics to the United States.
