Herbert Henry Asquith was a British Liberal politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. Trained at Balliol College, Oxford, he first made his mark as a lawyer and as the Member of Parliament for East Fife before joining Liberal cabinets and becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1906. As Prime Minister, he led a period of social and institutional reform, advancing measures such as pensions, health insurance and unemployment insurance, while also confronting the challenge of naval modernization in the face of a rising Germany.
His government faced severe constitutional tensions in 1909–1910 when the House of Lords rejected David Lloyd George’s budget, prompting elections and proposals to curb the Lords’ powers. With the outbreak of the First World War, Asquith initially formed a Liberal government and later an interparty coalition; however, criticism of the war’s prosecution and internal problems within the Liberal Party led to his replacement by Lloyd George in 1916.
He returned to Parliament in 1920 and was raised to the peerage in 1923 as Earl of Oxford and Asquith. His career is remembered for combining domestic social reform with the political strains of wartime, which helped bring about the transition from Victorian Liberalism to new postwar party balances.
