Herbert William Mullin was an American criminal responsible for a series of murders in California in the early 1970s. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and with a history of psychiatric hospitalizations, Mullin developed delusional beliefs that led him to justify the killings as necessary sacrifices to prevent earthquakes. Between 1972 and 1973 he killed thirteen people by various means—blunt-force blows with a baseball bat, stabbings, and shootings—including victims found on highways, in homes, and at campsites.
Confronted by police after the string of crimes, Mullin confessed to the murders. At his 1973 trial he was found guilty: convicted of first- and second-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. In the following decades he had multiple parole requests denied.
Mullin’s case attracted public attention for combining extreme violence with a psychiatric dimension and for the narrative of his delusional motives. His case is often cited in studies of the interface between serious mental illness and violent crime, and it has prompted debate over criminal responsibility and psychiatric treatment in legal proceedings.
