Herbert Spencer was an English thinker of the 19th century whose work combined philosophy, biology and sociology, making him a central figure of classical liberalism. An admirer of Darwin, he coined the phrase "survival of the fittest" and sought to apply evolutionary principles to human institutions, a stance that made him known as a founder of social Darwinism.
His output included wide-ranging works such as The Principles of Sociology (1874–1896), Education: Intellectual, Moral and Physical (1863) and The Individual Against the State (1884). In these books he defended the primacy of the individual over the state, the authority of nature as a source of moral truths, and an emphasis on science education and character formation.
In his time Spencer achieved extraordinary popularity: he sold hundreds of thousands of copies and influenced professionals and laypeople across many fields. His legacy is ambivalent — he shaped debates on education, politics and social theory, and his ideas continue to be discussed and criticized in the history of the social sciences.
