Antoine Hercule Romuald Florence, known as Hercule Florence, was a draftsman, inventor, and pioneer of photographic techniques in Brazil. Born in Nice, he worked as a scientific illustrator on the large Langsdorff expedition (1825–1829), where he carefully documented landscapes, fauna, flora, and indigenous peoples — material of lasting value for ethnographic and natural-history studies. His visual output and accounts of the journey are a key reference for historical research on the nineteenth-century Amazon. After the expedition he settled in São Paulo and developed practical innovations: poligraphy, his own printing method to disseminate his studies, and the so-called “Papel Inimitável,” intended to prevent document fraud. Between 1830 and 1862 he systematized his experiments in the book L’Ami Des Arts…, collecting notebooks and correspondence on various discoveries. In photography, Florence experimented with silver salts and metallic chlorides, using a camera obscura and light-sensitizing processes. He recorded the term photographie in manuscripts from 1834 and developed procedures close to the foundations of modern photography, and is now recognized as one of the pioneers in the field.
