Charles Augustus William Nicholas Alexander Michael Bernard (Hereditary Grand Duke of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach) was a German prince and the heir apparent to the Grand Duchy of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach in the 19th century. The only son of Grand Duke Charles Alexander and Princess Sophie of the Netherlands, he was linked by dynastic ties to the royal kinship networks of Europe, which increased his political relevance beyond the borders of the small German state. Through his maternal descent — a grandson of King William II of the Netherlands — he held the second place in the Dutch line of succession from 1890 to 1894, a status that led him to learn Dutch fluently in preparation for a possible accession. In 1873 he married Princess Pauline of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach, with whom he had two children, including William Ernest, who later became Grand Duke. Charles Augustus’s premature death in 1894, six years before his father, prevented him from assuming the government; his dynastic line continued through the next generation. In the context of late European monarchies, his life illustrates the interdependence of royal houses and the importance of family connections for succession and political alliances.
