Frederick was the hereditary prince of Denmark and Norway in the late 18th century, the son of King Frederick V and Duchess Juliana Maria of Brunswick‑Wolfenbüttel. He married in 1774 to Sophia Frederica of Mecklenburg‑Schwerin, with whom he had several children, including the future King Christian VIII. Appointed regent in 1772 after the mental health of King Christian VII deteriorated, Frederick held the position until 1784. His regency, however, was largely nominal: real power rested with his mother and the minister Ove Høegh‑Guldberg, and Frederick’s influence on decision‑making was limited. The political context of the period culminated in the coup of 1784, when the young Prince Frederick (later Frederick VI) assumed the regency, further reducing Frederick’s public role. After the fire at Christiansborg in 1794 he moved to Amalienborg; his wife died that same year. Frederick died in 1805. He is remembered as a member of the Danish succession whose official and family positions indirectly shaped the succession that led to his son’s reign.
