Josias Georg Wilhelm Adolf, Hereditary Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont, was a prominent figure of the German aristocracy who became a senior SS officer during the Nazi regime. Heir to the former princely house, he held military and police posts, rising to SS lieutenant general and serving as police chief in the Weimar region, with supervisory authority over the Buchenwald concentration camp. During the war he also served in administrative roles, being appointed Higher SS and Police Leader in occupied France and promoted to a general of the Waffen‑SS. In 1944 and the following years he took part in internal investigations into abuses at Buchenwald, notably in the case of commandant Karl Otto Koch, which led to prosecutions of camp officials. After the conflict he was tried in the Buchenwald trial; initially sentenced to life imprisonment, his term was later reduced to twenty years and he was released a few years afterward on health grounds. He became head of the House of Waldeck and Pyrmont in 1946 and died in 1967, leaving a legacy defined by both his high social and military rank and the controversy over his responsibility for crimes committed under his jurisdiction.
