Karl VI was a member of the Habsburg dynasty who reigned as Holy Roman Emperor and head of the Austrian monarchy from 1711 to 1740. During his reign he sought to preserve the integrity of Habsburg territories in the absence of male heirs, issuing the Pragmatic Sanction in 1713 to permit female succession and keep the possessions undivided. That diplomatic effort dominated much of his foreign policy and required concessions, including the closure of the Ostend Company to secure international recognition.
Before becoming emperor, Karl was the principal Habsburg claimant in the War of the Spanish Succession, where he rivaled the Bourbons for the Spanish crown; he lost much of the Spanish possessions in Italy and the Low Countries, although Austria emerged from the war with territorial gains such as Naples and Milan. Militarily, his reign saw victories against the Ottoman Empire, with the incorporation of territories along the lower Danube.
Karl’s death in 1740 precipitated the War of the Austrian Succession, which tested the Pragmatic Sanction and marked the beginning of the long reign of his daughter Maria Theresa. His legacy is ambivalent: he secured dynastic continuity for his daughter but left the monarchy exposed to dynastic and diplomatic conflicts that reshaped the European political map.
