Rudolf II, a member of the House of Habsburg, was Holy Roman Emperor (1575–1612) and also Archduke of Austria, King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia. During his reign he adopted an ambiguous stance between confessional tolerance and support for the Counter-Reformation: he implemented Catholic measures and at times imposed military rule on rebellious cities, while in 1609 he granted a charter guaranteeing freedom of worship to nobles and towns in Bohemia. His rule was marked by difficulty in keeping the Habsburg domains united. Revolts in Austria and Hungary, together with tensions with his own brothers, weakened his authority; from 1608 Archduke Matthias took over much of the power and forced Rudolf to cede territories. In 1611 Rudolf was compelled to give up effective rule, retaining only the imperial title. Known for his intellectual and eccentric bent, he moved the court to Prague and became a patron of the arts and sciences: he supported figures such as Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, took an interest in alchemy, astrology and curious collections, and was portrayed by artists including Giuseppe Arcimboldo. His turbulent reign and the fragmentation of power are seen as a prelude to the convulsions that culminated in the Thirty Years’ War.
