John Herschel Glenn Jr. was a United States Marine Corps aviator, astronaut, businessman, and politician. He became internationally known as the first American to orbit the Earth during the Friendship 7 mission in 1962, completing three circuits around the planet. Before his space career, he distinguished himself as a fighter pilot in World War II, the Chinese Civil War, and the Korean War, shooting down enemy aircraft and receiving multiple military decorations. Selected as one of the original seven Mercury astronauts, Glenn helped establish the American human presence in space and was awarded honors such as the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and, later, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. His image and achievements influenced U.S. space culture and policy during the Cold War. After leaving NASA, he pursued a long political career as a Democratic senator from Ohio, serving from 1974 to 1999. In 1998, already retired, he returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to orbit the Earth and the only individual to have flown in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs. His legacy combines aeronautical pioneering, military service, and political representation, marking him as a central figure in the United States’ public and space history.
