Maria Josepha of Bavaria (Maria Josepha Antonia Walburga Felicitas Regula) was Holy Roman Empress and Queen of the Romans by marriage to Joseph II. Born into the House of Wittelsbach, the daughter of Emperor Charles VII and Archduchess Maria Amalia, she brought important dynastic ties between Bavaria and the Habsburgs to the marriage. Her marriage to Joseph II, celebrated in 1765, was arranged for dynastic reasons and under strong pressure from Maria Theresa; the union was marked by mutual coldness and by their inability to produce heirs. Contemporary accounts described her personally as kind, shy and benevolent, though little cultured and of limited understanding. Maria Josepha formally held the titles Archduchess of Austria and Grand Duchess of Tuscany during the brief period she was empress. She died in 1767 of smallpox, and her death had political repercussions: the dynastic link with Bavaria was later invoked by Joseph II in territorial claims that led to the War of the Bavarian Succession. Buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, Maria Josepha is remembered chiefly for the representative nature of her position and for the indirect role her marriage played in the dynastic tensions between the Habsburgs and the Wittelsbachs.
