Hope Cooke is an American writer and historian best known for having been the consort (Gyalmo) of the last Chogyal of Sikkim, Palden Thondup Namgyal. Born into a well-to-do San Francisco family, she rose to international attention when she married the crown prince in 1963, an event that transformed her from a New York socialite into a public figure within Sikkimese-Tibetan political and social life. During the political turmoil that preceded Sikkim’s annexation by India, her position came to symbolize the tensions between the monarchy and pro-integration movements. The collapse of the kingdom and Cooke’s subsequent return to the United States in 1975 ended her public role at court; the couple’s divorce was finalized in 1980. Back in New York, Cooke built a literary career: she published memoirs, guides, and works on urban history, wrote reviews, and contributed to periodicals and documentary projects. Her books include the autobiography Time Change and the guide Seeing New York. Over the decades she has also worked as a teacher and consultant on cultural and historical topics, maintaining a reputation as a bridge between Asian and American experiences.
