Muhammad Hosni Said Mubarak was an Egyptian military officer and statesman who governed the Arab Republic of Egypt from 1981 to 2011. Trained at the Military Academy and the Air Force Academy, he rose to prominence as an air commander and gained prestige after the 1973 War, which led to his appointment as vice president in 1975 and, following the assassination of Anwar al‑Sadat, to the presidency in 1981. For nearly three decades in power, Mubarak built close relations with the United States and maintained the peace treaty with Israel, also acting as a mediator in regional conflicts. His government was characterized by external stability and diplomatic cooperation in the Middle East, but also by growing authoritarianism and concentration of power at home. Beginning in 2011, allegations of corruption and popular dissatisfaction over unemployment and inequality culminated in large protests that led to his resignation in February of that year. He faced several trials related to the deaths of protesters and to corruption charges; some convictions were overturned or revised on appeal. Mubarak died in 2020. His legacy is controversial: he is remembered both for the longevity of his rule and his regional diplomatic role, and for criticisms concerning corruption, political repression, and the model of governance that prevailed during his tenure.
