Hugo Lafayette Black was an American jurist and politician who served as a U.S. senator from Alabama (1927–1937) and later as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1937–1971). A supporter of the New Deal, he rose to prominence in the Senate as a reformer and as chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor, taking part in investigations of airmail contracts and in legislative initiatives that helped shape modern labor law. Appointed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Black became one of the Court’s most influential voices in the twentieth century, known for a textualist reading of the Constitution and for arguing that the rights of the Bill of Rights should be applied to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. His work influenced debates over civil liberties and the limits of state power, though he took controversial positions in cases such as Korematsu v. United States and Griswold v. Connecticut. Black’s career also includes controversial episodes related to his prior association with the Ku Klux Klan, which he said he had left before taking office in the Senate. His legacy remains defined by a combination of advocacy for the liberal policies of the New Deal era, a lasting impact on constitutional jurisprudence, and ethical and political controversies that continue to accompany his name.
