Hugo Erfurth was a German photographer best known for his portraits of cultural figures and celebrities in the early decades of the twentieth century. Trained first as a painter at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, he refined his photographic practice through an apprenticeship with court photographer Wilhelm Höffer and soon opened his own studio, establishing himself in the pictorialist aesthetic with gum bichromate and oil pigment prints.
Over his career Erfurth maintained close ties with Dresden’s artistic avant-garde, photographing figures such as Otto Dix, Paul Klee and Oskar Kokoschka, and also worked in theatre, industrial photography and experiments with photograms and photomontage. In 1922 he opened the Graphisches Kabinett Hugo Erfurth, a gallery that mounted exhibitions by artists including Kokoschka, Nolde and masters of the Bauhaus, and supported young local talent.
An active organizer, he co-founded the Gesellschaft Deutscher Lichtbildner and played a prominent role in the German photographic scene, including presiding over juries for decades. Although part of his studio was destroyed during the war, his portraits survived. His legacy includes representing German artistic photography in the interwar period and inspiring later generations, commemorated by an international prize that bears his name.
