Ilsa Konrads is a former freestyle swimmer of the 1950s and 1960s, known for her achievements in middle- and long-distance events. Over her career she set 13 individual world records and was part of the quartet that won the silver medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay at the 1960 Olympic Games. Her competitive record also includes titles and medals at the Commonwealth Games, along with several pioneering marks in the 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m distances. Born in Latvia and emigrating to Australia during World War II, she developed as an athlete under coaches such as Don Talbot, frequently training alongside her brother John Konrads, who was also an elite swimmer. Together they became prominent figures in Australian swimming of the era, known as the “Konrad Kids”. After retiring from the pool, Ilsa worked in journalism and in the editing of design publications, serving as an editor for magazines such as Belle and Vogue Living and contributing to the Sydney Morning Herald. Her sporting legacy has been honored with induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the awarding of the Australian Sports Medal.
