Peter III (1728–1762) was Emperor of Russia for a brief period in 1762, from the House of Holstein‑Gottorp. A grandson of Peter the Great, he served as heir presumptive under Empress Elizabeth and, upon ascending the throne, sought to implement a set of reformist measures in a short time. His foreign policy marked a shift: he immediately ended Russia’s participation in the Seven Years’ War by making peace with Prussia, and even prepared military actions against Denmark to protect the interests of his native duchy. Those decisions temporarily realigned the European balance and provoked controversy among the Russian nobility. Domestically, in just six months he promulgated numerous laws and enacted notable measures such as proclaiming religious freedom, combating corruption, and abolishing the state secret police. Some historians view these initiatives as relatively liberal modernization efforts for the period. His brief reign ended with a coup led by his wife, who took the throne as Catherine II. Peter’s death shortly afterward remains shrouded in doubt, and historians continue to debate his life and legacy, balancing negative accounts with reassessments that emphasize his reformist tendencies.
