Indro Montanelli was one of the most influential Italian journalists and historians of the twentieth century, author of an extensive body of journalistic work and a celebrated multi‑volume Storia d’Italia. He became known for a clear, direct style—shaped by his experience as a foreign correspondent—and for a liberal‑conservative stance that criticized both the excesses of mass politics and communism. His career shows a complex political evolution: he volunteered in Italy’s colonial campaigns in the 1930s, later grew close to the fascist regime before distancing himself and, in 1943, joining liberal resistance groups; arrested by the Nazis in 1944, he escaped to Switzerland shortly before his planned execution. After the war he distinguished himself at Corriere della Sera and later served as editor‑in‑chief of il Giornale, also founding il Giornale nuovo. A victim of an attack by the Red Brigades in 1977, Montanelli maintained—despite setbacks and controversies—a firm, independent public stance, refusing simplistic alignments. His legacy lies both in his narrative and historical output and in his lasting influence on the Italian press and on public debate about political culture and journalism.
