A Portuguese infanta by birth, Ana de Jesus Maria de Bragança (1806–1857) was the ninth and youngest daughter of King D. João VI and Queen D. Carlota Joaquina. Despite her royal origin, she became noted for a non‑political marriage: in 1827 she married General Nuno José Severo de Mendoça Rolim de Moura Barreto, then 2nd Marquis of Loulé, with whom she had five children. That union — the first of an infanta with someone outside the royal family — provoked controversy among conservative circles at court. Her childhood and adolescence were spent between Portugal and Brazil because of the court’s transfer in 1807; she returned to Portugal for good in 1821. Already married and pregnant at the time of the ceremony, she traveled around Europe with her husband, living chiefly in Paris, where most of their children were born. The couple avoided taking sides in the dynastic struggle between D. Pedro IV and D. Miguel I, choosing a more discreet course and enduring long periods of exile. She separated in 1835 and settled in Rome, where she died in 1857 and is buried in the crypt of the Church of Saint Anthony of the Portuguese. She never used the title of duchess, as she died before her husband was elevated to Duke of Loulé. She received national and foreign civil honors that reflected her status in the nineteenth‑century monarchy.
