An Infanta of Portugal by birth, Maria das Neves de Bragança belonged to the Miguelist line of the House of Braganza, a branch exiled after the deposition of her father, King Miguel I. Granddaughter of European dynastic networks, she was sister and aunt to several members of reigning houses, ties that placed her at the center of monarchical affairs in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1871 she married Prince Alphonse-Charles de Bourbon, the Carlist claimant to the Spanish throne and a Legitimist claimant to the French crown. Alongside her husband she took an active part in the Third Carlist War (1872–1876), a role that defined her public life and linked her to the Spanish traditionalist movement. The couple had no children. After her husband’s Bourbon claims gained strength, in 1931 his supporters styled her as Duchess of Anjou and of San Jaime, and likewise as queen in pretence of France and Spain. She spent most of her life exiled in Central Europe, dying in Vienna in 1941. She received several honorary decorations and left memoirs concerning the Carlist campaigns, contributing to the historical record of that conflict.
