María Cristina of Bourbon (1911–1996) was an Infanta of Spain, the fourth daughter of King Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. Belonging to the generation that experienced the fall of the Spanish monarchy, her life was marked by the family’s exile after the proclamation of the Second Republic in 1931, first settling in France and later in Italy.
During the exile she lived in Rome with her father from 1933, a period in which the royal household dealt with the personal and dynastic consequences of hemophilia affecting some of the princes. In 1940 she entered a morganatic marriage with Enrico Marone‑Cinzano, 1st Count of Marone‑Cinzano, a union that received recognition from King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy through her husband’s title.
The marriage produced four daughters — Vittoria Eugenia, Giovanna Paola, Maria Teresa and Ana Alessandra — and the Infanta kept a relatively private profile, without significant public dynastic claims. She later returned to Spain and died in Madrid in December 1996, leaving an association with the generation of infantes who experienced the traumatic transition from monarchy to republic and with the records of twentieth‑century European royal families.
