Ingemar Johansson was a Swedish boxer who rose to international prominence by winning the world heavyweight title in June 1959, when he knocked out Floyd Patterson in the third round. A charismatic, media-friendly figure of his era, he was known for the power of his right hand — nicknamed the "toonder and lightning" — which earned him a place among boxing’s greatest punchers according to specialist publications.
Before turning professional, he won the amateur silver medal at the 1952 Olympics, and as a professional he collected regional and European titles, becoming European champion twice between 1956–1958 and 1962–1963. His professional career included notable victories and comebacks after a serious hand injury and military service, as well as participation in decisive fights that qualified him for the sport’s highest rank.
Johansson’s brief world reign ended in the rematch with Patterson in 1960, when he lost the title by knockout. Nevertheless, his historic victory, popular charisma, and appearances in the press and film made him an emblematic figure of postwar Swedish boxing, leaving an influence on subsequent generations.
