Irène Joliot-Curie was a French chemist best known for, together with her husband Frédéric Joliot-Curie, discovering artificial radioactivity—a discovery that earned them the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, she graduated from the Faculty of Sciences in Paris and worked at the Institut du Radium (Curie Institute), where her doctoral thesis dealt with the alpha decay of polonium. Her scientific work focused on radiochemistry and studies of the atomic nucleus, contributing to the production of artificial isotopes used in medicine and research.

Beyond her research, Irène played institutional and political roles: she took part in French scientific administration, helped found the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and served as Undersecretary for Scientific Research; after the war she joined the Atomic Energy Commission and directed the Institut de Radio. She was also active in promoting women's education and worked with peace organizations.

Extensive exposure to radioactive materials marked her life: she developed leukemia, likely linked to work with polonium and radium, yet continued to combine research, teaching, and public duties into her final years. Her legacy includes advances in the production of radioisotopes, lasting institutional influence, and a family of scientists who continued the tradition of service to science.
