Isala Van Diest (Anne Catherine Albertine Isala Van Diest) was a Belgian physician recognized as the first woman to obtain authorization to practice medicine in Belgium. Educated in Switzerland, where universities already admitted women, she defended a thesis on prison hygiene and worked within the English medical environment before establishing a practice in Brussels, obtaining a royal decree in 1884 that permitted her professional activity. Her career highlights the institutional and religious obstacles women faced in higher education in the nineteenth century. Daughter of a surgeon, she received an advanced education and drew on progressive contacts made during travels to England. She worked at the New Hospital for Women in London, joining feminist networks and social reformers who shaped her commitment to public health and the protection of vulnerable women. Active in social work, she collaborated with institutions that sheltered former prostitutes, took part in the fight against the trafficking of women, and served on the board of a Society for public morality. In 1892 she co-founded the Belgian League for Women's Rights with Marie Popelin and was also prominent in the abolitionist movement against prostitution. Her legacy endures in public honors, street names, scientific projects bearing her name, and commemorative works, marking her place in the history of women’s rights and medicine in Belgium.
