Sultan Iskandar ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail was the 24th Sultan of Johor and reigned for nearly 29 years, until his death in 2010. From 1984 to 1989 he served as the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, a symbolic and constitutional office that made him the country’s commander‑in‑chief of the Armed Forces during his term. During his reign he was known for an independent stance and for actions that at times strained relations between the Johor royal household and the federal government. His public life combined charitable gestures and administrative initiatives — such as scholarship grants and annual public audiences with subjects — with controversial episodes. Allegations of violence and incidents of a violent temper shaped parts of public opinion and culminated in 1992 in significant changes to the legal treatment of royal immunity. Sultan Iskandar left an extensive web of dynastic ties across several ruling houses in Malaysia, with children married into different royal families, and his legacy is viewed ambivalently: respected by many for his attention to his subjects and criticized by others because of controversies surrounding his personal conduct.
