American actor and entertainer Jack Haley became known as a comedian, dancer, singer and radio personality. He began his career in vaudeville and established himself in musical films of the 1930s and 1940s. He worked for studios such as Fox and RKO, appearing in films alongside performers like Shirley Temple and Frank Sinatra, and hosted a popular radio program from 1937 to 1939 that featured collaborators including Lucille Ball. His best‑known role was the Tin Man (and the Kansas counterpart, Hickory, in the sequel sequence) in the 1939 classic, a performance that brought him lasting recognition. Preparing the character required changes to the makeup after problems with the actor originally cast; Haley suffered an eye infection caused by the metallic makeup paste, which temporarily halted filming. Beyond film, he performed on recordings and in short comedies and later worked in real estate while making guest appearances on television series. An active member of his Catholic community in Beverly Hills, Haley came to personify an image associated with early 20th‑century American popular entertainment.
