John Whiteside “Jack” Parsons was an American rocket engineer, chemist, and occultist whose work in the 1930s–1940s played a decisive role in the emergence of the U.S. space program. A co‑founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Aerojet company, Parsons developed the first castable composite propellant and advanced research on both liquid and solid fuels, contributing directly to JATO technology used in World War II. Self‑taught through amateur experiments from his teenage years in Pasadena, he worked with Caltech colleagues in the Rocket Research Group that would become JPL. His scientific career was marked by practical solutions and notable experimental talent, but also by hazardous laboratory practices that led to his dismissal in 1944. Parsons is also remembered for his involvement with the religious philosophy Thelema and for leading the California branch of the Ordo Templi Orientis, which shaped his public reputation. He died in a controversial incident in 1952, officially recorded as an accident. Today he is recognized by historians of science and of esotericism both for technical innovations that anticipated the space age and for the complex mixture of science, mysticism, and countercultural currents that defines his legacy.
