Jack Joseph Valenti was an influential political adviser and executive in the United States film industry. Initially involved in politics, he served as special assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson, acting as a liaison with congressional leaders and accompanying Johnson at historic moments. His background included an MBA from Harvard and experience in advertising and consulting, which brought him into the center of political and corporate power. In 1966 he became president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a position he held for 38 years and from which he shaped industry practices and policies. He devised the MPAA film rating system — including the changes that produced the current PG, R and NC-17 categories — and was a prominent voice in debates over censorship, standards and distribution. Valenti also became known as a vigorous lobbyist for copyright protection, opposing technologies and practices he viewed as threats to the industry, from the videocassette to the digital era, and worked to promote legislation such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. His tenure left a controversial legacy: he helped institute film self-regulation and commercial defense strategies for studios, while also suffering notable defeats, such as the loss in the dispute over the circulation of screeners.
