Jacob Anton Schorer was a jurist and a pioneer of the homosexual emancipation movement in the Netherlands. Trained in law at Leiden, he worked as an attorney, prosecutor and deputy judge before devoting himself intensively to combating the legal criminalization and stigma directed at men who had relationships with other men. In 1912 he founded the Dutch section of the Wissenschaftlich-humanitair Komitee, which later became known as the Nederlandsch Wetenschappelijk Humanitair Komitee (NWHK); he led campaigns against the discriminatory article 248-bis of the Penal Code and produced reports and correspondence widely circulated to inform and sensitize officials and the public.

Schorer collaborated with pioneers of sexology, adopting positions that argued for the innate nature of sexual orientation, and he assembled a specialized library made available to researchers and others interested in the subject. His social standing and the title jonkheer eased political contacts that he used to intervene in cases and influence parliamentary debates. During the German occupation he dissolved the NWHK and had his library and archives confiscated; after the war he continued to advocate for legal equality, though with less public impact.

Legacy: his institutional and networking efforts laid the groundwork for the reorganization of the Dutch homosexual movement after the war and inspired initiatives such as the Schorerstichting, founded in 1967 to support homosexuals’ health and to promote publications on the topic. Today his name appears in memorials and place names that acknowledge his contribution to LGBT rights in the Netherlands.
