Jacques Brunius, stage name of Jacques Henri Cottance, was a multifaceted figure in 20th-century French film and culture. A distinctive actor in works by Jean Renoir and Luis Buñuel, he was notable for memorable parts in shorts and features as well as for his work as a director and documentarian, with credits including Violons d'Ingres and co-direction of La vie est à nous. He was also a critic and promoter of avant-garde cinema, cofounding La Revue du cinéma in 1928 and gathering essays on French experimental film in En marge du cinéma français (1954).
Associated with the surrealists—close to Jean and Pierre Prévert and linked to André Breton and groups such as Octobre and Contre-attaque—Brunius contributed to several movement journals and helped promote popular heritage, notably advocating recognition for Ferdinand Cheval’s Palais Idéal. During the Second World War he worked in London on the BBC’s “Les Français parlent aux Français” programs.
His legacy spans acting, directing, criticism, and cultural promotion: he identified and promoted filmmakers and works from the cinematic and artistic imagination, leaving a dispersed body of films, documentaries, texts, and editions that influenced the reception of avant-garde cinema in France.
