Jacques Feyder was a Belgian filmmaker, screenwriter and actor who spent most of his career in France, with periods working in the film industries of the United States, Britain and Germany. Active from the silent era, he became known in the 1920s for films built on strong realism and balanced visual compositions; in the following decade he became a reference for what came to be called poetic realism in French cinema. He adopted French nationality in 1928. Among his most influential works are literary adaptations and dramas of psychological and social cast, such as L'Atlantide, Crainquebille, Visages d'enfants, Gribiche, Carmen and Thérèse Raquin. In the 1930s he signed hits such as Le Grand Jeu, Pension Mimosas and La Kermesse héroïque, the last of which won international awards and was politically controversial in its day. Feyder also worked in Hollywood, directing Greta Garbo in The Kiss and directing foreign-language versions of American productions, but he returned to Europe after disagreements with the American studio system. His cinema favors realistic detail, the use of locations and a close working relationship with actors; recurring themes include dangerous love, the gap between reality and illusion, and maternal love. Feyder’s critical reputation fluctuated after his death in 1948, partly because his films circulated little, although film scholars recognize his importance as a craftsman and an influence on later generations.
