Jacques Salomon Hadamard was one of the most influential French mathematicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for fundamental contributions to number theory, complex analysis and partial differential equations. His thesis and early work culminated in the proof of the prime number theorem (1896) and earned him major prizes, establishing his academic reputation from his time in Bordeaux to his chair at the Sorbonne and membership of the Académie des Sciences. Over his career Hadamard published widely in diverse areas — geodesy, geometric optics, hydrodynamics and boundary-value problems — and introduced concepts now standard, such as Hadamard codes, Hadamard matrices and the inequality that bears his name. He also authored pedagogical and expository works, including Lessons in Elementary Geometry, and wrote reflections on the creative process in mathematics. Active in international scientific life, he lectured at several International Congresses of Mathematicians and held prominent positions at institutions such as the École Polytechnique and the Collège de France. His personal life, marked by losses during the First and Second World Wars and by a temporary exile in the United States, drew him to pacifist causes and left-leaning political tendencies in subsequent decades. Hadamard’s legacy remains central to mathematical analysis and number theory.
