Jakob van Hoddis, the pen name of Hans Davidsohn, was a German expressionist poet of Jewish origin whose work marked the aesthetic shift at the beginning of the twentieth century. He became best known for the poem Weltende (1911), whose dark irony and grotesque imagery are often cited as inaugurating the expressionist style in German poetry and influenced later generations; some critics regard him as a precursor of surrealism in Germany. Active in the vibrant circle of young Berlin writers, Van Hoddis took part in Der Neue Club and the Neopathetisches Cabaret, venues that were decisive for the literary renewal of the period. He published in influential magazines such as Die Aktion and Der Sturm, and had a single collection published in his lifetime (Weltende, 1918). His biography was marked by psychiatric crises and by his family’s failed attempt to flee after 1933; prevented from emigrating for reasons related to mental health, he remained in Nazi Germany and was deported in 1942 with patients from the sanatorium to Sobibór, where he disappeared. The critical rediscovery of his work through posthumous editions consolidated his legacy as a singular and disturbing voice of literary expressionism.
