James Benson Irwin was an American astronaut and test pilot, an aeronautical engineer and an officer in the United States Air Force. A Naval Academy graduate with master’s degrees in aeronautical and instrumentation engineering, he accumulated extensive test‑pilot experience — including flights in the Lockheed YF‑12 prototype — and logged more than 7,000 flight hours, 5,300 of them in jets. He received military honors, including the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 1966, he served on support crews for key missions and was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 15 (1971). On that J‑Mission, which focused on scientific objectives, Irwin and commander David R. Scott carried out three moonwalks and conducted extensive geological work that led to the discovery of the so‑called Genesis Rock, one of Apollo’s most significant scientific finds. During nearly three days at the Hadley–Apennine site, Irwin helped operate the Lunar Roving Vehicle and totaled 18 hours 35 minutes of extravehicular activity on the lunar surface. Minor cardiac problems appeared at the end of the mission and were detected and monitored by the medical team on Earth. After returning, he became known for reconnecting with his religious faith. Irwin’s legacy remains associated with his piloting skill, Apollo 15’s scientific contributions and his pioneering role in lunar exploration.
