James Clavell was a British-born writer, screenwriter and filmmaker with an international career, whose work reached wide prominence between the 1960s and 1990s. A former British Army officer and prisoner at Changi during World War II, he turned that experience into King Rat (1962), a semi-autobiographical novel that established his literary reputation and was adapted for film.
As a screenwriter he contributed to cinematic hits such as The Fly (1958) and The Great Escape (1963), and he directed the acclaimed To Sir, with Love (1967). Yet it was as a historical novelist — the author of the so-called “Asian Saga” — that he gained his greatest recognition: Tai-Pan (1966), Shōgun (1975) and Noble House (1981) became bestsellers and inspired widely viewed television adaptations and series.
Clavell’s writing was notable for combining meticulous historical research, epic plotting and morally ambivalent characters, creating a lasting influence on Western portrayals of Asia’s past. His ability to weave personal experience into fiction, together with the commercial success of his books, secured him a prominent place in twentieth-century literature and entertainment.
