James Harold “Jimmy” Doolittle was a pioneering aviator and United States Air Force general, best known for leading the Doolittle Raid in April 1942 — the first U.S. bombing raid on Tokyo during World War II — an action that earned him the Medal of Honor. A Berkeley graduate who began his career as a flight instructor in World War I, Doolittle distinguished himself between the wars with record flights, air races and, above all, technical contributions: he performed the first instrument-only “blind” flight and helped develop navigation instruments such as the artificial horizon and the directional gyro. During World War II, in addition to commanding the mission against Japan, he held important commands in North Africa and the Mediterranean, and from 1944 to 1945 led the Eighth Air Force in Europe. His role was both operational and inspirational, demonstrating initiative and innovation at critical moments of the conflict. After the war he returned to civilian life as an executive while continuing to serve as a reservist on scientific and technological projects related to missiles and the space program. He was promoted honorarily to four-star general in 1985. He died in 1993 and is remembered for the technical legacy and bold leadership that shaped American military aviation.
