James Fenimore Cooper was an American novelist and public figure of the early 19th century, remembered as one of the first writers to shape a distinctly American literary imagination. Born in 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, he spent much of his life in Cooperstown, the town founded by his father, and combined nautical experience with a prolific literary career. He began writing almost by accident, publishing his first novel in 1820, which failed, but he soon established himself as an author by publishing numerous novels in the following decades. He became especially known for sea stories and historical romances that explored national themes and the American frontier, helping to define the prototypical American hero. His best‑known work, The Last of the Mohicans, is often cited as his masterpiece and exemplifies Cooper’s attention to landscape, cultural conflict, and the formation of United States identity. He also lived for several years in European countries and, on returning, adopted a critical stance toward the nation’s political direction, which brought him into public controversy. He died in 1851, leaving a lasting legacy in American literature and influence on subsequent generations of novelists.
